OCA pledges full support to Police and student leaders in their fight against child abuse: Violence against children must stop!

The Office of The Children’s Advocate (OCA) is extremely disheartened with the spate of killings of the nation’s children, and has called on all well-thinking Jamaican’s to join forces to end the atrocities. The OCA extends its deepest sympathies to the family of the 11 and six year old siblings whose bodies were pulled from a tank in St. Ann today following a gruesome discovery. The OCA also extends condolences to the families of the 5 year old girl who was found dead at her home in St. Mary last week, and the 14 year old Frome Technical High School student, Santoya Campbell, whose dismembered body was found near her school early this week.

“It is extremely painful as Children’s Advocate when I have to issue a statement like this once again condemning the cruelty that is being meted out to our children. The constant reports of our children being killed, raped or attacked in the most vicious ways must stop. This type of treatment toward those who should be the future men and women of our nation, speaks volumes of the depravity of respect for the right to life that some members of society continue to display,” Children’s Advocate Mrs. Diahann Gordon Harrison stated.

“The OCA will continue to redouble its efforts in supporting the Police in its work to bring the perpetrators of these and other heinous acts against our children to book. The Office also stands in full support of student leaders who have reached out to the OCA as they too take a stand against violence against themselves and their peers.”

“I also wish to use this medium to let those who continue to hurt our children know that they can rest assured that the Office of The Children’s Advocate will continue to be relentless in standing up for children’s rights as the preservation of the rights and best interests of all children within the island of Jamaica, is and will remain our priority, and we will do everything within our legal authority to ensure that justice prevails,” Mrs. Gordon Harrison added.

Under the Child Care and Protection Act (CCPA) all adults are duty bound to ensure that the rights and best interests of all children are preserved at all times. If you have information, know, or suspect that a child is being abused call 1-888-PROTECT (1-888-776-8328), or email: report@oca.gov.jm.
